Types of PCBs
There are three types of PCBs
Single-sided PCB
Double-sided PCB
Multilayer PCB
Let us discuss one by one.
1. Single-sided PCB:
A single-sided PCB is the most basic type of printed circuit board. It consists of only one conductive copper layer above the substrate. The electrical components are soldered or mounted onto one side of the board and the entire etched circuit can be seen on the other side of the board.
Key Features of Single-Sided PCB
It is cost-effective and suitable for a high volume of orders
Suitable for Low-Density Designs
Easy to manufacturer
Easy to design
Easy to repair in case something goes wrong
Single-sided PCBs are used for simple and low-cost electrical/electronic devices like:
Calculators
Power supplies
LED Lighting boards
FM Radios
Timing Circuits etc.
2. Double-sided PCB
It is also known as a two-layer PCB they have two-sided traces with a top and bottom layer. These boards can mount conductive copper and components on both sides of the circuit board, which allows the traces to cross over each other through the small hole-like structure called via.
3. Multilayer PCB
It is a circuit board that has more than two layers. All multilayer PCBs must have at least three layers of conductive material which are buried in the center of the material.
Higher assembly density
Smaller size (considerable savings on space)
Increased flexibility
reduces overall weight
4. Applications of Multilayer PCBs
GPS (Global Positioning System) technology.
Industrial controls
Satellite systems
X-ray equipment
Heart monitors
